ERA Hearing -- TUESDAY

I just received word that the Equal Rights Amendment resolution I filed will be heard in committee Tuesday (February 3). The hearing is before the Rules Committee at 1:00 PM in the Senate Lounge.

Yes, this is the same ERA that we've been trying to ratify since I was a baby. It's also the same ERA I've discussed on this blog. It's still alive and still relevant and I need your help to get this thing passed once and for all. If you happen to be in Jefferson City Tuesday, please stop by the hearing. If you are out of town, please contact the members of the Rules Committee and tell them you support equal rights for the women of Missouri. Your daughter will thank you for it.

I e-mailed the Committee Members! How about you, my fellow constituents of Senate District 10?

I am writing to urge you to support Equal Rights in the State of Missouri by supporting SCR 3, which you will hear in Rules Committee tomorrow, Tuesday at 1:00pm.

I am 27 years old and received both a Bachelor's Degree and a Master's Degree in Women's Studies. As you can imagine, learning about the justice movement for Women's Rights in the 1970s was often studied and discussed. However, I will not implore you with academic arguments. My mother worked for the passage of the ERA in the 1970s and 1980s, a faithful Roman-Catholic mother of 3 whose Navy husband supported her work from deployments in Iceland and Spain. My Great-grandmother, who raised my mother, worked for the passage of the 19th Amendment guaranteeing all women the right to vote. In 1996, I had the pleasure of attending the 100th Anniversary of the Seneca Falls Suffrage Convention in Seneca, NY as an official representative of the Girl Scouts. At 15 I held an original suffrage flag in my hands, and I nearly burst with pride knowing I was honoring the work my great-grandmother had done.

I ask you, Senator Engler, to allow me, at the age of 27, nearly 89 years after my great-grandmother helped win women the right to vote and more than 30 years since my mother fought for women's rights, to honor the work our mothers did, to give me the chance to burst with pride knowing you and our great state of Missouri support Equal Rights for Women.

Sincerely,
Sarah M. Gillooly
